However , I could be doing things that return the biggest ROI without doing the most important things. a small program with a better ROI but less overall impact). And, well, that’s largely okay with me. Employee engagement.

” Yes, particularly at the beginning when you’re establishing credibility, you may be asked for ROI. It’s not “ok, we’ll get you a course on this”, it’s “sure, we can do that course, and tell me what the outcome should be, how will we know it worked?” How much did it cost to fix this.

A ‘Field of Dreams’ Industry

LinkedIn has released their Workplace Learning report, and one aspect stood out: Only 8% of CEOS see biz impact of L&D, only 4% see ROI. A new report (in addition to the two I cited last week) documents the problems in L&D. And if you ask the top ways they evaluate their programs, the top five methods are subjective or anecdotal.

The Phillips have made a similar career with their fifth level, ROI, measuring the cost of impacting level 4 against the value of the impact. I certainly can’t fault him for it either, as he did have a sensible model and it could be put into effective use. There are worse ways to earn a living. Others have played upon his model.

Pushing back

You can help them here, doing some business consulting on ROI for them. Again, there could be pushback, but you need to be prepared to stick to your guns. If it isn’t going to lead to some measurable delta, they haven’t really thought it through. And here’s it’s not a guise, you really are being helpful.
