My first exposure to Phillips’ ROI—although I didn’t realize it at the time—was through a colleague who introduced me to Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels. And for a long time, that is what I thought the four levels were. | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR APRIL 16, 2012 My 15 favourite Australian e-learning bloggers Wendy Phillips – Wendy develops e-learning at one of the biggest telcos in the Asia-Pacific region. Fay Moore made my day when she nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award. I’m still unsure as to whether this is the blogosphere’s version of a chain letter, but in any case it gives me a good excuse to: A) Thank Fay for her support, and. B) Promote other bloggers. | | | | | | | KAPP NOTES NOVEMBER 10, 2010 CAC Presentations Phillips kicked off the CAC this year with introductions and advice for attendees. Dr. Phillips kicks off the CAC. The first presentation this semester is by Robyn Defelice who is discussing project management and the elements that contribute to effectively managing a project. Robyn Defelice discussing project management, instructional design and finding your inner PM. | THE PEFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT BLOG APRIL 21, 2010 E-Learning vs. In-Person: A False Dichotomy They quote Jack Phillips: “Our studies have shown that participants in e-learning programs are less likely to follow through than in an instructor-led program,” notes Jack Phillips, Ph.D., However, in this quote, Phillips seems to be making the same mistake as the elearning-is-always-better folks in suggesting that instructor-led programs always have better results (follow-through). Online training and conferencing advocates continue to ask the wrong question. No one can deny that online programs offer a substantial cost savings over in-person training and conferences. | LEARNING IN A SANDBOX APRIL 5, 2012 Measuring the value of online communities and networks for business 2011) model for promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks and the Phillips measurement model linking the value of communities using online social network technologies for performance improvement with business objectives. This week I presented a research in progress together with Robin Yap at the 8th International Conference on Networked Learning in Maastricht. So how are you measuring the value of your online communities and networks of practice? This research-in-progress paper will showcase an enhancement of the Wenger, et. | BLOOMFIRE AUGUST 5, 2010 Training Consultant: What Every Trainer Ought to Know About ROI (Interview) m referring to Jack and Patricia Phillips’ 6-volume Measurement and Evaluation Series, which covers the Phillips ROI methodology in fine detail: ROI Fundamentals: Why and When to Measure Return on Investment. What did the Phillips ROI methodology teach you? From having conducted an ROI evaluation according to the complete Phillips methodology, I can tell you the process is quite extensive. [Editor's note: We've interviewed Paul before on mobile learning and learning communities when he was working with Intel. You can read that piece here.]. This is incorrect. | | | | | | | | | -
LEARNFOREVER | WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2012 Theory and practice And for good reason, as whatever the merits of Phillips, Brinkerhoff, Basarab and others, nobody else has enjoyed the sustained influence of Kirkpatrick and his “family business”, as Donald recently described it. Donald Clark’s Plan B blog is excellent, and I commend it to you. His recent endeavour, to identify the 50 most influential theorists in the learning and development canon, and blog about each of them (in 50 days!) is unparalleled, and deserves to be published to a much wider audience. veritable tour de force. His last post, on Kirkpatrick , caught my eye. MORE >> -
LEARNFOREVER | THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2011 Reasoned evaluation Jack Phillips, the Return on Investment guru, argues Kirkpatrick’s four levels are at best inadequate and need ROI as a fifth level. A client asked me today about approaches to evaluation, and this got me thinking about how advocates of different approaches get very dogmatic about what works and what doesn’t work. Kaliym Islam, in Developing and Measuring Training the Six Sigma Way , says “none of the four levels in the Kirkpatrick model capture business feedback or business reaction to the training product”. But do we have to dismiss the Kirkpatrick levels to embrace ROI? MORE >> -
KAPP NOTES | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009 Fall 2009 Corporate Advisory Event Starts Today Welcome and Introductions (12:15 PM) Dr. Karl Kapp and Timothy Phillips (if you had to miss something, this might be it.) Today marks the beginning of one of my favorite events of the year. Our annual Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) event. This is an event where students of instructional technology have a conference with professionals in the field where they can learn, exchange ideas and select students for jobs and internships. It is a great win-win event. Including several entrepreneurial companies started by alumni of the program. and social media solutions. MORE >> -

ELEARNING ACUPUNCTURE | WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2008 Audio Feedback on Student Assignments in Online Courses Phillips, P. I attended the inaugural Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) annual conference earlier this month in Banff, Alberta (this was formerly the Canadian Association of Distance Education conference). It was both a spectacular location and a spectacular conference. One talk that I thought would be interesting to the readers of this blog was by Dr. Phil Ice (formerly of University of North Carolina Charlotte now of American Public University System ). On the end-of course survey, the results remained impressive. Feelings of increase involvement (56% of students). MORE >>
