In that respect, the LMS is the DVD player. and SCORM 2004. 2004 also has several editions, but we’re going to skip that). as a DVD and 2004 as a Blu-ray. is older than 2004, but it’s still widely used. And Blu-rays require a specialized player.

Do you import a bunch of PowerPoint slides, add a player skin with the obligatory Next and Previous buttons, attach some word documents as resources, and then hit publish? SCORM 2004, Experience/TinCan API? We draft our learning and program outcomes. Where are they going to complete the course? On the road? You know what?

Teed (2004) suggests that there are several elements that define an activity as a game: Competition: The score-keeping element and/or winning conditions motivate players and help assess their performance. It’s good “comfort” programming for me. By the time the course sets the status, the SCORM player is already closed and that Run-Time Data is lost in the shuffle. SCORM 2004 requires a good exit for rollup to occur. While this seems like a nice thing to do, it cuts the course’s communication with the SCORM player.

After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. SCORM was updated in 2004, and that is the existing standard for course delivery.
