I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). These are vendors who have been around a long time, build share of the market and generally speaking had early name recognition which has helped them in build business. I see this with vendors who do the ala carte items with per item cost, say the system doesn’t come with an LRS, but you can add it for X dollars (the vendor has the LRS, they just do not include it as a feature). In R&D, you will at times have to eat the cost. Want to save costs, do nothing.

Skillsoft is fine, but be aware that you do not have to buy the entire bundle, you can pick and choose (they never seem to mention that). If you know someone in HR on have them on a committee, have you ever heard these statements? (or or if you are in HR or HRIS, said them yourself).

Nor can you base it only on cost – which we all do – despite our “we look at all the features for consideration” that we all love to preach to anyone who will listen. 3rd party courseware providers (ex: Skillsoft, Wiley). As a whole, business is being generated in all areas, how much is a different story – since it varies by market and by the vendor themselves. I wish there was transparency on this, but in every release or announcement of this spin, there has yet to be mention that the 3rd party courses/content is not free, and a separate cost. I’ve seen courses that cost over 100K to build, and they come out as garbage.
