My Personal Learning Network (PLN) is the vehicle that carries me to this learning, and social media is the highway that enables me to get there. We would converse on a one-to-one basis using telephones (which were almost always tethered because there were also very few mobile phones before 1990, and they were the size of a house brick). This means that texting too, has become normal practice, as has our use of touch screens, social media and search engines. Unported License.

I spend a lot of my time on public transport, and one of my favourite pastimes is eavesdropping on other people's conversations. It not only passes the time, but I also learn new things from listening in, even if the conversations are sometimes ill-informed. She replied: 'I was hoping for a conversation with these two.'

Today was particularly interesting because I had a conversation on this blog with ePortfolio Keith (Keith Brennan aka @wiltwhatman), who was commenting on my Three Things post. In the post I made the remark that today's learning needs to be personal, social and global, all of which can be mediated through technology.

There are many social theories that explain our membership of 'tribes' or communities. Do we build time in for discussion and conversation?

The digital tools we now have at our disposal enable what Rose (2010) calls "multi-way conversation." We establish norms and decide what is important for our community.
