Wikis and Learning – 60 Resources

Tony Karrer

I’m involved in several discussions around how to use Wikis as part of learning solutions. So, of course, I went to eLearning Learning and I looked at Wiki , Collaborative Learning with Wikis , Wikis and eLearning 2.0 , Wikis Corporate eLearning , Social Learning with Wikis , Wiki Security and a few others. Here’s some of what I found: Why a Wiki?

Examples of eLearning 2.0

Clark Quinn

During my presentation last Thursday that was an introduction to eLearning 2.0 as part of an online event for the eLearningGuild, I mentioned a few common ways that I've seen eLearning 2.0 I always suggest people shouldn't try to come up with a big eLearning 2.0

Wiki Course Authoring

Tony Karrer

In my Ten Predictions for eLearning for 2008 , I said - Wiki + SCORM + Add-ins will become more common for easy authoring. Not sure if he saw my post, but I was just reminded by Tim Seager from Xerceo about their Prescribe tool that provides: Full Wiki, RSS functionality that is SCORM conformant for tracking and managing competencies. It's horribly cryptic, you can't tell what's happening and it defeats the whole point that I see in using a Wiki for authoring.

We Need a Wiki in a Wiki

eLearning Blender

It's obvious that a Wiki would be a great help in my organization. I believe a Wiki would be a great addition to our systems so that it is easier to access commonly needed information quickly. So, we know we need a Wiki. Here is what I have identified as our options: SharePoint Wiki – SharePoint 07 offers some basic Wiki options that would probably satisfy our needs. If I can prove that the Wiki is being used then the benefits should be evident.

Wikis - Public vs. Controlled - Why There's No eLearning Wiki

Tony Karrer

I received an email asking me if I knew of any Wikis that provided information on eLearning concepts. there's not really a place where you can find a Wiki that covers eLearning concepts. You can certainly go to Wikipedia and find information about learning concepts including eLearning and eLearning 2.0. However, Wikipedia has some issues (as does any public Wiki) as a place for defining these terms. The article on eLearning 2.0

The first workshop of the day was eLearning 2.0, I'm currently researching Wiki's for my organization so I was going into this presentation hoping to come out with a lot of ideas of how they can be used. Tony provided some great information regarding Wiki's and the audience had some great examples of how they are being used at their organizations. A Wiki seems like it would be a great way to keep the organization updated on all of the changes.

Good Questions Identify eLearning 2.0 Opportunities

Learning Organizations, eLearning 2.0 and Edupunk

Tony Karrer

Janet juxtaposes the recent inclusion of eLearning 2.0 The questions she raises are: Is the edupunk ideology saying that the use of social media in commercial learning management systems is an assault on the very philosophy of learning 2.0? If you're a trainer embracing learning 2.0, These are fair questions that are also central to the issues of the Enterprise 2.0 So no problem if their Wiki is tied to the LMS.

eLearning 2.0 Random Thoughts based on Chat

Tony Karrer

One interesting result is that the audience for my eLearning 2.0 Social Bookmarking and Wikis and Blogs are a form of social networking I never said this, but several people pointed it out in the chat. The same thing can be true with social bookmarking, wikis, flickr, etc. blog to blog to wiki to person) and coming back to a particular node in that string? How can you put policies/procedures on WIKIs when I thought the nature of them is that anyone can edit?

Use of Wikis as Compared to Other Tools

Tony Karrer

For an upcoming panel session that will be looking at where eLearning is going, I was trying to get a ballpark sense of how much eLearning is being done with various tools as an indicator of where we stand in terms of adoption of eLearning 1.0, and 2.0. One thing I would say is that I would expect that we'll see adoption of Wiki tools a lot more - but many of the uses will be more as a replacement of web page creation than as a eLearning 2.0

Biases that eLearning 2.0 Faces (or What We Are Up Against)

Tony Karrer

Saw a post in the eLearningAll group that expresses a lot of the biases that exist in the world of eLearning around eLearning 2.0 approaches: Before you "optimize eLearning" through the use of Wikis, Blogs, PodCasts, video feeds, IMs, XML, SOAP, AJAX, and other "new"/"improved" methods, it is really important to understand: 1. How can these "optimize eLearning" 2. Wikis: Will you have a librarian organizing posted content and verifying that it is correct?

Promoting Social Learning

eLearning Blender

I recently implemented a Wiki and discussion forums for different uses. The Wiki is used to retrieve process and procedural information while the discussion forums are used to share best practices much like LinkedIn forums. Examples for contests could be the greatest contribution made to a wiki or something like the most questions answered in a discussion forum. Content Quality

Tony Karrer

When I do sessions on eLearning 2.0 , I often will ask for the audience to provide a list of barriers or risks. If I allow people to edit a wiki, how will I know it's good quality? Yes, someone could post something wrong on the wiki, but they likely are already putting that same information in emails and IMs. At least on the wiki you can get correction.
