I have been part of Ning groups before, but find it overwhelming, very quickly because there seems to be multiple inputs for information. Even as an organizer, when I get into the Ning group, I feel overwhelmed. How do social networks relate to personal learning? I don't know about ning or even facebook.

We managed to let people connect beforehand through a platform (ning ) and afterwards link participants to other networks or initiatives (like the outcome mapping community ). Last year we experimented with a ning platform, a twitter account and a few videos. In ning, there is a new application which is called member-mix.

I can also listen with lots of attention - I'm the kind of person who at the end of the party didn't notice all the things going on because I was only paying attention to the people I was talking to. But it could also be that you can see who is online ( for instance in Ning or Facebook you can see who is connected, or also on Skype ).

Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. However, they typically try to give a better sense of the person and make interactions more social. A lot of what it comes down to is the primary view you show users - classic threaded discussion view - or a personal home page with all that is happening in the network.
