The term "podcast" is a combination of the words "iPod" and "broadcast," as it was initially used to describe the process of downloading radio broadcasts from the internet and listening to them on an iPod through a program called ippoder. A podcast is a digital audio file that can be listened to or downloaded online.

Google will end Gears, an open-source plug-in project it launched two years ago to allow Web applications to function even when a computer isn’t connected to the Internet. Although it works with Microsoft’s Windows, Linux and some Apple Mac OS X versions, it doesn’t work with Mac OS X 10.6, also known as Snow Leopard.

I encounter a similar situation when I come across Mac users and Apple aficionados generally. I understand that Apple is a more stylish brand and that some people feel it is worth paying more for the prestige that this reflects upon them. And Microsoft and Apple are not even direct competitors.

The noise about the release of Apple’s iPad has been a bit overwhelming. As Apple says, the iPad is slightly smaller than a magazine. In terms of input, the iPad has a virtual keyboard and Apple offers an auxiliary physical keyboard that connects to and charges the iPad. Open Development Standards. No problem.
