Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. What makes this type of course design unique isn’t that it has been around for more than dozen of years, but that there are vendors who portray themselves whether intentionally or not, as “THE” micro-learning platform. Change of messaging, and the seemingly misunderstanding by vendors that there is a difference between training and L&D. I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. Built in authoring tool – never hurts. The teachers I know, do not have several hundred or even a thousand dollars around to purchase a 3rd party authoring tool. 40 vendors had at least three gamification features (8 of them had at least four features). Several vendors offered the ability for admin (clients) to upload their own badge. You do not need a built-in authoring tool to do this. Blue Volt was doing this back in the late 2000’s and still do it – tied to a gift card reward program; other vendors are jumping on as well (with more in 2015, but really really tiny numbers).

I’ve met people who had worked on the original SCORM standard, those driving the new xAPI standard, as well as early champions of our industry who coined the terms and built the original software tools. Through the 70s it was being marketed as a tool for retraining unemployed workers in new fields. The computers were great, but software was lacking. Users wanted to create their own programs without needing to know programming and thus, the authoring tool was born.
