Authoring Tool Trends for 2017

eLearning 24-7

The authoring tool industry continues to evolve. I won’t regurgitate everything that appeared and did not for that matter in the authoring tool space as a whole in 2016, but a few have crossed over in a positive light, which is pushing trend. Similar to the one I had for an LMS, here is the Authoring Tool version for 2017. I suspect some vendors might tie it together in some pricing approach, giving an appearance that it is free. .

Authoring Tools- The DevLearn Experience

eLearning 24-7

I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools.

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. While the assumption would be that all the products are alike, or that fee based tools are superior to their free counterparts, nothing could be farther than the truth. Once you did though, you could do quite a lot with the tool. 43 Vendors do not have one.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

Authoring tools whose interface either looks like to was written in 1997 (thus outdated) or is so confusing, that the premise of rapid, just is not possible. Web Conferencing tools, requiring you to download plug-ins or other files before you can start – one of the biggest pet peeves among end users, and the number one reason why people fail to get in, ending up calling your administrator, or you. If I am vendor, whose product is paid (i.e. We are user friendly.

State of the E-Learning Industry 2019

Change of messaging, and the seemingly misunderstanding by vendors that there is a difference between training and L&D. What I hear a lot is “L&D” and not training, when they identify who they are targeting for the tools, platforms, etc. SaaS authoring tools, trying to become hybrid Lite LMSs (a return of a trend I totally disliked back in 2010-2014). LRSs not being utilized by vendors who have it in their systems. The vendor.

What is the Importance of SCORM Compliant LMS?

No SaaS – While the e-learning industry as a whole is going into the cloud, AT vendors as a whole are staying with desktop, even though they have features such as notes (ideal for collaboration, SME peer review in the cloud). Personally, I like this because everyone who uses software, often jumps right in and starts going, rather than take the time to read how to do things (inc. Some AT vendors have removed it as well. Hollywood is well known for making sequels.

Authoring Tools. In 2012 it has been all about collaborative/peer review with authoring products, and it still will be in 2013, but the avatars/actors with/without backgrounds are going to be in “fuego” Where can it go? I believe that you can expect some type of voice capability with the actors/avatars as in the ability to either lip synch with the characters via audio tool/recording tool in the product will show up more in 2013.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. Back in the early 2000′s, LMSs often had content mgt features built within their system, but called themselves learning management systems. rather then going through the LMS vendor. I have found I can land a better price then using the quick way via the LMS vendor.

LMS Potluck

eLearning 24-7

As micro-learning gains more attention and more people are starting to utilize the methods in creating such courses, vendors who are aware of this new opportunity are making sure that people know that their system supports micro-learning. What makes this type of course design unique isn’t that it has been around for more than dozen of years, but that there are vendors who portray themselves whether intentionally or not, as “THE” micro-learning platform.

The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Built in authoring tool – never hurts. The teachers I know, do not have several hundred or even a thousand dollars around to purchase a 3rd party authoring tool. After all, there are more important things to buy than a 3rd party authoring tool (from the teachers’ perspective). SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. Assessment tool.

LMS is not dead (again)

Litmos

Authoring tools? Nope healthy, even though there are less authoring tools in the industry today, than five years ago. Go back to early 2000’s to 2010 or so, and there were way more LCMSs than exist today. Yep, in 2000. We did it, back in 2000 to zero in more on those who wanted short bytes of learning, via online. Name one other software/hardware solution where someone looks at it, and goes, “oh that is so traditional.” It’s dead. .

Product Review: GeoLearning GeoMaestro

eLearning 24-7

Offers Lectora (rapid content authoring tool) as a separate option which can integrate with GeoMaestro. It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. Why vendors still think this is not needed or used, makes no sense. Content Authoring Tool. GeoLearning decided to select Lectora as their optional content authoring tool for GeoMaestro, which is somewhat confusing.

LMS or LXP – Confused?

eLearning 24-7

Sure a vendor can say we are an LXP, but a LMS too or vice versa. LMS vendors on the other hand are adding LXP features, to counter, and in some marketing may note, learning experience blah blah. . I have seen a few posts on LinkedIn by people calling a learning system – learning software. No, it is not learning software. The Sierra Titles of the 90s and early 2000s, were learning software offerings.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

Consider the internet; developments on top of the TCP/IP protocol like SMTP and HTML allowed a variety of tools to work together to bring us email and the world wide web. After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. Initially, when you developed eLearning, you were pretty much dependent on the tool you developed it in.

Preferably on/off synch, but as I mentioned in my LinkedIn mini-post, most learning system vendors still are not on/off synch with said mobile app. The majority of vendors have two mobile apps – one for iOS and one for Android (and yes, it is easy to say one mobile app with two different OS versions). Trials – Learning Systems

eLearning 24-7

I’m referring to software trials, where you get to test out the product, before you buy. . Authoring tools? Assessment tools? Other e-learning tools? In the early 2000’s right up to about 2012, trials were common in the learning system market. Not every vendor offered them, but more than enough did and consumers liked that. For the vendor, it was a potential win, way better than no one reaching out to them at all.

A Brief Historical Look at Corporate Training

Litmos

I’ve met people who had worked on the original SCORM standard, those driving the new xAPI standard, as well as early champions of our industry who coined the terms and built the original software tools. Through the 70s it was being marketed as a tool for retraining unemployed workers in new fields. The computers were great, but software was lacking. Users wanted to create their own programs without needing to know programming and thus, the authoring tool was born.
