Product Review: Plateau TMS (Talent Management System)

eLearning 24-7

I’ll be the first to admit, that I was not a big fan of the previous versions of the Plateau system. After viewing the Plateau TMS, my concerns in one area have been eliminated, in others, not so much. Plateau LMS is a Talent Management System, made up of four modules. Plateau Learning. Plateau Performance. Plateau Career and Succession. Plateau Compensation. Front end (what the end user sees) UI – A giant Kudos to Plateau.

And yeah there are vendors who will taut that they are in X list or Y rankings and thus should be included. This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). These are vendors who have been around a long time, build share of the market and generally speaking had early name recognition which has helped them in build business.

How a vendor of this size and quality can have this business approach in this day and age is beyond me. The user interface is slick – way better than the days of Plateau – which some people still call it – uh, its not. It is way better than anything Plateau ever did, but for the amount of money the system costs and the fact SAP now owns them, there is no reason that the UI should look like it does. Any vendor can do that. #3

Oracle then followed suit by acquiring SuccessFactors who had acquired Plateau in the past. I’m sure the people who had purchased Plateau or even SuccessFactors Learning system were delighted to hear the news. What about other companies out there in the HCM space, will they be seeking to acquire LMS vendors with such a goal in mind? In just the past year, more smaller and mid size LMS vendors are jumping into the talent management space, by offering various components.

Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now).

It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it. Plateau is now called SuccessFactors.
