PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

Tony Karrer

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. A PLE that is 'inside the enterprise' is a contradiction in terms.

Interesting discussion in the chat about whether if you don’t pay for services if you can trust it. This is related to the trust issue–I’m more likely to trust services that let me get my data out to back it up somewhere. Difference between PKM/PLE/PLN: PKM is more work-focused. When worlds collide

This is reminiscent of the discussions held at the recent PLE conference in Barcelona, where some theorists attempted to defuse the tensions between didactic institutional provision and individualised PLEs by proposing a compromise. To reconcile the two seemingly polemic positions of learner control vs institutional provision, the authors of this paper propose that the PLE requires an elaboration, which 'integrates important instructional functions for learner control'.

Limitless learning

Learning with 'e's

The personal learning environment (PLE) is still a bone of contention. What is interesting about Ismael's model is the way he incorporates the ZPD into a general model of the PLE, and argues that in fact, both MKOs and ZPD can constitute a PLE. This is all premised on whether we conceive of a PLE as a learning philosophy rather than simply a set of tools as most people see it. For me, the PLE is peculiar to the individual who makes it.

Content creation is an important feature in many personal learning environment (PLE) models, and together with organising and sharing, makes up the cardinal triumvirate of skills that provides learners with a clear advantage. No one seems to be able to agree on what a PLE is. Last year we ran a special issue on PLEs, and to give you a flavour, here are two of the abstracts: The first article, written by the guest editors Mark Johnson and Oleg Liber, examines learner agency: We present the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) as a practical intervention concerning the organization of technology in education. Wisdom of clouds

Learning with e's

Let me explain: PLE. The tools within a PLE are most likely not used for the purpose of formal education of all learners within an educational institution. Let the Academics or Learners be the users of some cloud based services, where all equally share the privileges like control, choice, sharing of content etc on these services. This is different from a PLE, a VLE and a PTE. Tags: Manish Malik VLE PLE Cloud Learning Environment

Open Learning Network vs Informal Learning Environment

E-Learning Provocateur

I was immediately interested because, like me, Mott is striving to bridge the gap between the organisation’s LMS and the learner’s PLE. The organisation manages the ILE on behalf of the learners, who are free to search, explore, ask and share at their own pace and at their own discretion, and – ideally – integrate the system into their broader PLE. While the ILE is designed to bridge the gap between the LMS and the PLE, it purposefully keeps them apart.

3) An exemplification of Edupunk philosophy is the rise of the personal learning environment (PLE) in which the learner selects his/her own tools and technologies to apply in formal and informal learning. Typical PLEs will incorporate a social networking service, reflective and collaborative tools, e-mail and a mobile device. Origin Learning

The term personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals. A typical PLE, for example, might incorporate blogs where students discuss what they are learning, and their posts may reflect information gathered from across the web- on sites like YouTube or in RSS feeds from news agencies.

Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity. Certainly PLE and PKM would seem to be too limited, right? Central to my PLE is the people I work with and the applications I use for communication with those people.

So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? And it started dawning on me that the PLE was about a revolution in learning -- about teaching people to learn -- about empowering individuals to take control of their own learning environments, their futures. PLE is a concept. Tom Haskins wrote, "Life is my PLE." The PLE is not a corporate responsibility, but a societal one.
