The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

Offer a toll free number, but only for that specific country – again, this is seen widely – so if you are in the United States, the toll free line is for the United States; if you are in the U.K., toll free number or multiple countries toll free numbers. Now, why doesn’t a vendor mention this information to a potential client, at least the first point – I can understand holding off on the second point, for selling purposes. E-Learning 24/7. For some vendors the words are just words, not actually making it happen, and when they do, many charge for the privilege of you contacting them. I’m sorry, if I am spending thousands of dollars on a system, I expect customer service – at least the first year to be free. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that.

Freebies are no longer free. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success. While their continues to be a slight increase in providing tech support and service for free (at least one year), the same cannot be said for e-commerce.
