What they are trying to do is to offer an alternative to an open source platform which allows unlimited users. A lot of people do not want it – and even though it could be turned on or off, it often is an additional cost for each module. E-Learning 24/7. The difference is that they are not a LMS ecosystem.

What it is though, is something that will rock your foundation and can turn the LMS world standing on their head, because now you can become your own learning SCORM compliant system. Ability to take SCORM compliant courses, including SCORM 2004 from a portal, online learning community, social learning platform or solution, a group, whatever.

Open Architecture. APIs are open source code, so that developers (inc. Google code is open source code, so you can manipulate. You want e-commerce, but your vendor doesn’t offer it or wants you to pay for an add-on module. You can find an e-commerce API, plus APIs for a shopping cart.

But, the reason I constantly bash this into e-learning vendors heads is this just DON’T GET IT. LMS vendors who are moving into the Talent Management Space. Adding a benefits module. Integrated e-mail. Again, open source programs exist today that you can use as a feature within your LMS.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

Go back a decade or more and check out the number of systems that offered modules you could add to your system. Just as it was back then, most modules were actually in the system but turned off. When you bought the module it was turned on. What Modules are being seen today as they were back in the early 200os? E-Commerce.
