Do You Need a Villain in a Learning Story?

In the real world, the bad guys and good guys aren’t always so clear cut as in the movies. However, I’m not quite convinced that a “villain” is what we need in learning. Real people are rarely motivated by simply being evil. They may be confused, misguided, angry, or disorganized.

Tips for Storytelling in Learning

Be detail oriented, craft mental movies. Don’t start with the presenter intro. Start with a story. Add a surprising element. Conflict–two strong opposing forces where the outcome isn’t certain. Give sensory information. Show don’t tell. Engaging the senses helps learners remember the story. Stay positive.
