Just some thoughts that puzzle me on why some LMS/LCMS vendors (okay over 98% of them) are still in some time warp from the Eighties when it comes time to enhance their services and technological solutions. So why do vendors refuse to do this? Unfortunately, we do not have that luxury when buying YOUR LMS/LCMS.

The bottom line without getting technical or overly detailed, the solution is hosted on your vendor’s servers and not hosted on your internal servers. Per Host – My number #1 vendor goes this route, but they and a few others push ultimate options with a minimum number of hosts and I’m not even talking Enterprise yet. There a few vendors who offer a lot more, but nobody is doing like 30 or 40 extensions at this point. Expect to pay though, but yeah we can do that.

I could easily argue that a micro-learning platform can slide under a learning engagement platform and/or a learning platform in of itself. More of a surprise is that with the exception of 6 web conferencing vendors, who have apps specifically for the iPad/iPad2 market, you can count on one hand the number of LMS/LCMS vendors that offer the same thing.

A colleague of mine attended a session this past week at ATD that covered LMS, LXP and LCMS (why LCMS was included? These two vendors are EdCast and Degreed. Getting back to being unaware, I find the same issue with a few vendors in the learning system space who are really LXPs, but have no idea. Both of which are LXPs.

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. Twitter has APIs, so does Facebook, even Linkedin. However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. Typically APIs are free. API Protocols.

A couple of weeks ago, a vendor in the micro-learning content space sent me a newsletter, where – wait for it. If you want to talk about a market that is having serious issues, go LCMS – and I’ll agree.

I will say that I’m not a fan of the analytics angle, because it opens up the approach that you could use the system in a somewhat manner of an LCMS or mini LMS (many SaaS authoring tools follow that path – and I dislike that too). I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t? Makes sense.

If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. Learning Management Systems, LCMS, Learning Portals. Adobe sees the system as a LMS with LCMS features. I’m not sure about the LCMS angle. . The only areas I saw was the ability for content versioning and RLOs, which are just a couple of pieces of a LCMS. As the administrator and thus the client, I should have the control to decide the points, not the vendor.
