An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). In my Ten Predictions for eLearning for 2008 , I said - Wiki + SCORM + Add-ins will become more common for easy authoring. Not sure if he saw my post, but I was just reminded by Tim Seager from Xerceo about their Prescribe tool that provides: Full Wiki, RSS functionality that is SCORM conformant for tracking and managing competencies.

Everything EdTech suffers from, and has for numerous years – in terms of how students learn, showed up, which resulted in really this indignation that online learning or as folks refer to as remote learning is a dud. Articulate Rise, is a cloud-based authoring tool, not a hybrid – and will fully admit as so.

You can use either your own 3rd party content authoring tool and upload it into the “Cloud and then wherever you are, output either to your LMS, or onto Moodle or even WordPress (they have a plug in for that) OR place the course in Facebook or nearly any solution that accepts APIs. Nowadays I think that the gig is up, and everyone realizes the scam. eLearning or elearning. WYSWIG (What You See is What You Get) is extremely popular – especially with learning systems’ authoring tools. However, there are authoring tool vendors, who still think PowerPoint can be an authoring solution.

as the next application platform got me thinking again about what corporate eLearning development will be like in five years. To a lesser extent people are using Rapid eLearning Development tools but this is expected to grow significantly. We also are seeing a Shift in eLearning from Pure Courseware towards Reference Hybrids.

But by far the most vivid memory of 2006 comes from a comment made during a panel that I was moderating on eLearning 2.0. tools inside organizations.

They do not allow you to use any other 3rd party rapid content authoring tool vendor. Again, a learning portal can achieve this – i.e. by you incorporating APIs, mashups or some component of such with code and you are using as a back end a CMS. Please download it and not just open up open in your window.

The Swipe Rule – Vendors need to swipe your card to follow up with you; which is fine; but I cannot tell you the number of times when I was a Director of Training and told the vendor in the face to call me or email me, and never heard from them. You could count on your hand the number of vendors even looking at it, and I’m not just talking LMSs/Learning Portals, but content authoring tools and other products. A couple of rapid content authoring tool vendors are incorporating HTML5 features in their tool, which can be used on tablets, and of course the iPad.
