Software Shopping

eLearning Blender

Jackpot! Finally got the buy in from the boss to spend some money on Adobe software, mainly for developing eLearning and printed training materials. Thanks to the good ol' educational discount I can really make the most out of a $1000 budget. Obviously, I need the Creative Suite 3 but that's where things get sticky. I am looking at 2 different packages and the only difference between the 2 packages is that one includes InDesign and the other includes Fireworks.

Performance Support

Clark Quinn

Great post by Jay Cross that uses the history of performance support to set up the need for what Jay calls Learnscapes. I've been a long-time believer in EPSS and ePerformance. Jay tells us: Performance support is blossoming in organizations today under the label of Web 2.0. Remember the original premise of PS, making information available to workers instead of forcing them to memorize it?

Learning styles – where’s the science?

From the Coleface

Over many years of running Train the Trainer courses and coaching facilitators, I’ve spent time talking about learning styles e.g. Honey & Mumford and occasionally Visual, Auditory & Kinasethetic. Whilst I feel like participants have got great learning value from them, I’ve had a growing sense of unease about the robustness of their scientific basis and how much you could validly infer from them.

Memory research roundup - More Sleep

Following my last post, I received a comment from njtom as follows: "Brain scans of humans and animals have indicated that bursts of information pass between the neocortex and the hippocampus during the first hours of sleep, known as slow wave sleep. It is during slow wave sleep that the brain remembers declarative or episodic memory – precise facts a person can access consciously.

YouTube - Learning Styles Don’t Exist. A cognitive psychologist argues that learning styles, as the theory is generally understood, don’t exist and aren’t supported by research. He acknowledges that there are differences in visual and auditory memory, but says the research doesn’t show that differentiating instruction based on learning styles actually has any effect. tags: learningstyles , education , cogpsych.

Here are some numbers that confirm a bit of what we thought and a few surprises.

My basic claim is that technology changes what is considered In Does new technology reduce the need to memorise facts? Some Questions and Answers

This is e-learning that needs to be done quickly, has information that is not permanent and that needs to be provided to as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
