The problem with asking random folks to recommend an LMS is that they have no idea on what specific functionality you need, nor your budget, nor your challenges or issues you are facing, nor your requirements, nor your training approach or L&D approach, nor your experience with e-learning. Yet, as I have often noted, it is rarely pushed upon in an RFP, let alone a demo. You the consumer can use the support card as part of your RFP process, which I strongly recommend. .

I mean you have no idea, unless you are Nostradamus, what the future will be, so how can you know what you will need for your learning and/or training in say six months or a year from now? I have always stated that before any call, at a minimum look at the vendor’s web site, go through the page(s) and see what you can extract. I never did a RFP nor spent more time than necessary to find a system. Try to avoid using a RFP template. Ask them who would be your point of contact – it may not be the person who is doing the RFP. Even if you choose not to use a RFP, make sure to create a quick spreadsheet listing the features you want – being specific. Similar to using the RFP, i.e. pricing, setup, training, etc.

Web Conferencing? In the good ol’ days vendors listed trials on their web sites OR if you liked what you saw in the demo, you asked them via the phone or e-mail for a trial. With the web sites, the usual approach was your name, company, and e-mail address and then they sent you either a login/password with a sitename.vendorlms.com or right into sitename.lmsvendor.com and off and running. Hello, web site yellow pages. .

I know there are plenty of people who say, they are new to the industry and systems and have no idea on what to ask – which is fair, but there are some things you can ask and should know, if you did some due diligence on your part. If you are a vendor you are likely to see it too often and it appears when the “potential customer” sends you a RFP without ever talking to you prior to. . Or they send the RFP after a discussion, but before seeing the product.

While I have conducted random sampling (as you would have with any polls out there), and data collection as part of my LMS RFP Template (New version now out), I believe it needs to be expanded. Vendors will be able to show they have attained this level, via an icon they can include on their web site, and via statements thru whatever means they select or choose. Vendors who achieve Gold will be recognized on the post.

Video web conferencing that is proprietary – Listen many of these vendors are making high cash intake and they can either build it, or find a freebie – interesting to note one of the biggest complaints I hear about Instructure is their web conferencing offering Big Button, which is free and well. Fun to use for kids – I know it is a novel idea, fun and education – how dare thee!
