With great anticipation I entered the huge expo at ASTD International show earlier this week. Lots of vendors, lots of potential. There were vendors that had nice LMSs and cool features. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. Social Learning.

Yeah your social was nice and yeah you had some cool features – but there were plenty of VLEs before you showed up on the scene – and I’m not even thinking Second Life. Oh, and communities of practice, which you have in your social? COPs hit their heyday back in the mid 2000′s. Maybe, it was just me.

Despite overall consumer demand (not just within e-learning) for tablets, and numbers showing that tablets are outselling notebooks, e-learning vendors as whole are sitting back and waiting. Increase in number of vendors. Social Learning. Frankly a few deserve coal in their stockings.

In the webinar, I brought up how LMS vendors were themselves perpetuating the myth of the bad things of social media (which is a necessary component of social learning), so, rather than identify the facts and data to potential clients who are concerned about social media and thus social learning, they instead do not include it in their system.

E-Learning development houses need to be able to demonstrate a clear value in their services. Why should companies go with e-Learning vendors when rapid e-Learning tools are available? Have the e-Learning vendor create the first few custom programs. I completely agree with this.
