In the context of e-Learning (back then it was just plain old CBT), this meant you had audio/video on the screen with timed text bullets. The learner could listen to the audio if her preferred style was auditory, OR read the text if her preferred style was visual. Im with you. I always tune out the audio and read ahead.

Cammy, I think you make a great distinction between storage and processing -- it reminds me of some of the cognitive theory, where we have to work with stuff in short-term memory both to help encode whatever the stuff is, and to be able to retrieve and work with it again later. For instance, dont show a detailed animation and have text on the screen with an audio narration. I dont think the answer is to only show a visual, or only have audio. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Were the video and audio identical? Im way out of practice. Thats an overload of the visual channel.
