Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed.

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). 19 Zenler Studio - I liked this product last year (2012) and I still find it quite favorable.

I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . FT’s Aura product. Who in their right mind, would use these tools? I was enthralled.

Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Authoring Tools for developers. The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers.

From an interaction (listed as interactivity) to a feature within the product. Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. HTML5 output. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. HTML5 templates. Not anymore.

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? SaaS: Software is in the cloud, on the internet.

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. I hope it does – especially with SaaS products.
