Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. Another example of an over inflated platform (IMO) whose name recognition is what drives them to big numbers. .

Q : I am curious on why Cornerstone On Demand, Saba and SumTotal do not appear in your top twenty lists even though they appear on other sites as the best products in the market. There is no doubt that they are popular platforms – but as noted above – popularity doesn’t mean best. So, back for another installment.

This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). Not everyone gets in. But I digress.

Talk to anyone who has a multi-tenant (multi-portal) platform and immediately they will pitch that they are ideal for any markets including the B2B. One vendor who isn’t on the list, for multitude of reasons, accepts over 25 payment gateways — that is enormous in size for this industry. That piece I see as the crust.

From a vendor perspective there was a huge impact, but what was odd, is that some vendors still are living in the past, as though, this is a minor blip, and in 2021, everything will go back as it was – corporate wise that is. Sorry to disappoint – but it won’t. . that needed a system. Oh, and a huge chunk stinks.

What is a sales enablement platform and why if they pitch it for sales training, does it offer customer service training too? Micro-learning platforms? Employee engagement platforms? e-learning.

I mention this because there are vendors who continue to push towards adding performance management functionality to their learning system, with many people assuming these vendors to be, LMS vendors when it just isn’t universally true. Performance Management is not going to replace Learning. Authoring Tools?

SumTotal Learning Management – They have come a long way. I readily admit for the longest time I was not a fan of SumTotal, but that was then, this is now. That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . I see way too many vendors think a web site is all they need and people will find them.

Without further adieu, Talent Management/Performance Management (TM/PM). Three months ago, only a few systems had either integrated for no additional charge or for additional fees, a talent management/performance management feature set. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. Ahh, how things have changed. Prediction.

Gamification as of right now, does not truly include gaming elements -0h sure some might say that to be the case, but in reality, well: If a platform says they have gamification it means that they have at least one of the following items. For some reason a lot of vendors, erroreously assume that modules is widely used – it isn’t.

In some cases it will be noted if it is based on a higher set of users, since there are platforms that prefer a minimum or focus on larger size businesses including associations, etc. E xpertus One ($$$-$$$$)- Still the best multi-tenant platform in the market. Each update takes the platform up on notch on its competitors.

Extensive APIs support. Support is fantastic and what I have found is they really care about their customers, a rarity in today’s space. TinCan support with mobile learning, however no on/off synch. Mobile learning support, but no TinCan nor on/off synch. Back in the days, the Plateau platform was ghastly awful.

But one of the biggest problems I see at such shows are the number of vendors who in hindsight I wished I avoided. I recall at ATD this past year, a vendor who was trying to sell people ahead of time their LMS. CD2Learning.

Several of the LMS vendors appear more than once, such as Oracle. They can be used to see how LMS vendors stack up against particular features.

The system lacks the ability to import skill dictionaries and job definitions and link definitions to competencies, doesn’t support a couple of languages including Russian and Dutch, and is missing mobile apps (i.e Support is above average.
