The evolution of personal learning environments

Origin Learning

A personal learning environment refers to the tools, technologies, resources etc. that a person uses at the individual level to build on his knowledge base. By and large, this constitutes John’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE). The coming of technology has naturally exposed us to more entertainment, and at the same time, to more learning.

I Believe in the Importance of a Personal Learning Network

Tom Spiglanin

When I started using Twitter for my professional growth and development, I didn’t realize that I was also starting to build my personal learning network. I simply found myself tweeting at a learning and development conference using its hashtag and others began connecting with me. I even gave it my own name: “On-fire learning.” Mark Sheppard. Anatomy of a PLE

Learning with e's

Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) do exactly what they say on the can - they are personal to each individual, created by them, owned by them, used by them within their lifelong learning. Some argued strongly for sole student ownership, vehemently opposed to any institutional meddling in a personal learning environment. What does a PLE look like?

Models For Designing Your Personal Learning Environment

A personal learning environment (PLE) is a solution for keeping up with the rapid pace of knowledge change. In adult learning, I think of it as a self-directed and evolving environment of tools, services and resources organized by a person seeking a […] Post from: The eLearning Coach Models For Designing Your Personal Learning Environment.

Physiology of a PLE

Yesterday I posted my views on what I think are the essential components of a Personal Learning Environment - the Anatomy of the PLE. The slide to the left represents the three main functionalities I believe are the most important functions learners need for lifelong learning in a digital age. I have written a lot about Personal Learning Environments in the past, especially when they were emerging as a concept, and sounded quite new. There were posts about the Anatomy of PLEs , their functionality , their role as a counterpoint to the institutional Learning Management System, and also their relationship to MOOCs and Connectivism. “One small step for e-learning technology, One giant leap for the e-learning industry.” Tin Can API (or ‘Experience API’) is one of the most extensively discussed technical topics amongst learning professionals all over the world today. This is mainly because of the relevance it carries in today’s world of ‘Learning Transformation’. INTRODUCTION.

PLE vs VLE

Primary education students, Adam Skill, Danny Houton and James Carhart, have created a most excellent video to accompany their paper for the Plymouth e-Learning Conference next month. The Importance of Personalized Learning – Part 1 of 3 – K12

Over the next weeks, I will be writing about personalized learning and how that applies to different learning populations. At first I’ll address K12 learning, then I’ll address how personalization affects a high-skill knowledge workforce, and a service workforce. Is K12 ready for Personalized Learning? To date, $3.5B of $4B has been awarded.

The personal web

Learning with e's

With the Southampton PLE Conference #PLE_SOU at full throttle, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate my views on the personal web. Personal Web Tools (PWTs) are thought by some to be synonymous with PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) but the two should not be confused. Sound like a PLE? Where do you go it you want to learn something new?

Off the rails?

Learning with e's

Some prefer to travel in a taxi, or even by using their own personal transport. This is a metaphor for personalised learning, with the personal learning environment supporting an individual's learning. Furthermore, unlike traditional formalised education, the personal learner determines his or her own destination. Or is there? How's that Amy?

Everyone has one

Learning with e's

Everyone has one - a personal learning environment, that is. We all learn. We all use tools to help us learn. Personal learning environments or PLEs, are the collection of tools (not just online) that enable us to connect, create and share content with our own communities of interest and practice. Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

I've been reading a lot over the past few months around Personal Learning Environments and a lot of related material. world that included a post by Bill Ives - Managing Personal Knowledge: Setting a Foundation for Transformation? adoption is getting folks to manage their personal knowledge and adopt practices like blogging for personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal learning. PWLE Not PLE - Knowledge Work Not Separate from Learning

Mohamed Amine Chatti (a fellow Eddie eLearning nominee) last two posts The LaaN Perspective , and Requirements of a PLE Framework are both interesting posts and worth reading. His requirements for a PLE Framework include: Personalization Social features Social filtering I ncorporate various Web 2.0 Flexibility and extensibility Web browser platform Aggregation/Mashups Ease of use Several thoughts jumped out at me: The concept of a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) exists, but actual PLEs only exist as theoretical combinations of skills, methods and tools.

Limitless learning

Learning with e's

The personal learning environment (PLE) is still a bone of contention. Over at the Open University of Catalonia, in Barcelona, Ismael Peña-López has been doing some stirling work on theories surrounding Vygotsky's learning model and PLEs. This is all premised on whether we conceive of a PLE as a learning philosophy rather than simply a set of tools as most people see it.

''Students should be at the centre of learning'', declared Stephen Downes , ''because there is no other place they could possibly be.'' Downes was speaking at the ELI 4th International Conference on e-Learning and Distance Education held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Stephen Downes was adamant in his view that personal learning is the way forward for all forms of education.

Personal Learning Resources

Learning with e's

Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are made up of more than web tools. My Personal Learning Network is essentially the people I connect with in order to learn what I need when I need it. But as I have tried to articulate in earlier blogposts , my PLE is more than people and tools. Posted by Steve Wheeler from Learning with e's.

Personal Learning Environments and personal learning environments

Tony Karrer

There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments. Getting back, I've seen quite a few blog posts on the topic: Stephen Downes - Personal Learning I can talk about webs and networks and personal learnings and PLEs but there's a disconnect unless people see themselves as learners rather than teachers. I believe that we all have a personal learning environment. and Personal Learning EnvironmentsAnd then over beers.

Deeply personal

Learning with e's

But is it really that deeply personal? I was reading Jim Campbell's article on personalisation of learning again today. For me this resonates clearly with the tension between the provision of Content Management Systems (what we commonly call institutional VLEs) and personal learning environments (PLEs). Personal Learning Tools and Technologies

Tony Karrer

I just saw a post by George Siemens discussing evolution of PLE concept and pointed me to two posts by Chris Lott based on his initial question - "What does your PLE look like?" - Tired of PLE Flak and I'm not interested in the PLE which then pointed me to a bunch of other posts as well - on the PLE and An audit on where stand with PLEs. Jane Hart has done a great job collecting individual answers to what learning tools and technologies that people use. And I also sympathize with the "no its personal" beat down he took. A little on methods.

More on Personal Learning Environments

Tony Karrer

Ray Sims has a great post on Personal Learning Environment and personal learning environments. His diagram and description that states that we not only each have our own personal learning environment, but that we are interconnected in all sorts of ways and need to be able to group things together for certain kinds of groups (organizational, informal, etc.) What I am reaching for is an optimized environment for Learning AND a loosely-couple optimized environment for Doing. In fact, the ideal in most cases is that learning is set up as doing.

PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. Stephen tells us.
