Social Networks

Clark Quinn

This week we looked at Social Networks. Here are some thoughts on this topic, especially thoughts around social networks for learning. Starting with Social Networking was a blessing and a curse. Social networks have a tendency to be a bit messy. Virginia Yonkers told us - I would like to know how to manage the information flows in social networks. How do we do this in the social network environment?

My Personal Learning Network is essentially the people I connect with in order to learn what I need when I need it. This post features Graham Attwell's chapter on the social impact of personal learning environments (PLEs). Graham Attwell shows how industrial models of education and training fail to address the needs of contemporary society, and argues that it is the PLE concept, with all its associated content generation and sharing tools, that will provide solutions. Open Learning Network vs Informal Learning Environment

E-Learning Provocateur

In the comments section of my previous post, Mike Caulfield kindly pointed me to the article Envisioning the Post-LMS Era: The Open Learning Network by Jonathan Mott. I was immediately interested because, like me, Mott is striving to bridge the gap between the organisation’s LMS and the learner’s PLE. Mott’s blueprint is the Open Learning Network (OLN). While the ILE is designed to bridge the gap between the LMS and the PLE, it purposefully keeps them apart.

Social networking sites: Facebook (2006), Myspace (2003), Bebo (2005), LinkedIn (2003) and other sites together have changed the face of social networking for ever. For good or bad, millions of users worldwide flock every day to their favourite social networking sites for their daily fix of pokes, foodfights, online games status updates and live chat. Twitter is one of the best stripped down social networking tools available to humankind.

Do You WANT an LMS? Does a Learner WANT an LMS?

Tony Karrer

I think that folks who are in the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) space have a much better idea of what will come next. In fact, many of us have all created our own Personal Learning Environment by cobbling together using a variety of tools (RSS Reader, Bookmarking, Social Networking, Desktop Search, Web Search, Personal Learning Blog, To Do Lists). That's what makes me think that something more along the lines of a PLE will begin to come together to replace it.

Theories for the digital age: Self regulated learning

Learning with 'e's

Self regulation of learning is thought to be a characteristic of individual students (Beishuizen, 2008) but increasingly can be contextualised within social learning environments. A number of collaborative and social networking tools regularly play a role within the average student PLE. It is not difficult to see that such sharing of knowledge can be easily achieved through social media and the use of personal digital technologies.
