Both SCORM and xAPI are content standards used to create eLearning courses. These eLearning protocols are important so that courses are interoperable between LMSs and organizations can track learning-related activity. Tin Can, otherwise known as xAPI, was developed in 2013 (over a decade after SCORM was released).

Every time I write about the course standards, whether on my blog or, lately, on LinkedIn, I receive a lot of responses, feedback, and folks wanting to know more. SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. Of course, that trend has shifted back.

The same logic applies to choosing a learning management system (LMS) with the right course content packaging tools. Thanks to the Aviation Industry Computer-based Training Committee (AICC) , elearning standards have been in place since 1988. Both SCORM and xAPI built off the framework AICC provided.

This year we will focus on the top ten authoring tools for 2013. SCORM/AICC. One of the trends I forsee in 2014 is an increase in the number of authoring tools enabling multilingual while creating a course. Thus when you place the course into a LMS that is in your native language, the course matches that language.
