Ditto when you buy a system that is SCORM 1.2 Or you have 200 videos and buy a system that doesn’t have batch upload. You want, batch upload.

There are three types of systems that slide under “learning platforms” The most common one supports PowerPoint, and videos and other content – and can track it, but they DO NOT support any version of SCORM, nor do they support AICC, PENS, Tin Can and so on. So you have to use their authoring tool to create courses.

What I am finding is that AICC is nearly gone in the LEP space (as it is with LMSs too), so if I was you, I’d seek SCORM, SCORM 1.2, coorpacademy, Learn Amp, Percipio by Skillsoft, Looop, EdCast, MyQuest, Learning Tribes, Lumesse, Filtered, 360Learning, Springest Go, Toolwire. xAPI as my top three. One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. The Forecasts. Rather than go into a whole diatribe about CMI-5, I recommend you read this info on CMI-5 (put together in part from vendor RISC). The quality of the content varies.

There are few and I mean only a few who follow this pattern (example: Skillsoft), where the course library is the primary and the system secondary. If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down. SumTotal by Skillsoft.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. I mean look at how long AICC has managed to keep a foothold, despite even the recent disbanding of the formal group. Paul Schneider in my opinion is one of the guru’s in the authoring tool industry.
