Right now, Im proofing a storyboard thats full of endless text bullets and boring software demos with no interactivity -- and theres really nothing I can do about it. Right now, Im feeling like just getting to good would be an achievement. Client demands, project schedules -- sometimes all you can do is churn it out.

In fact, its been almost two years since Ive written a storyboard and gone through the whole process. But I havent "done" a course in ages. I havent worked with a SME and thought about appropriate learning activities and chunked out the content. And now Ive got a two-hour custom course on my plate. Im excited.

So the vendor scopes it out and does the design work, the storyboarding, the development work. Sometimes the organizations sponsor is open to new approaches like interviewing or observing exemplary performers early in the process, or trying out drafts (even of flowchart-style storyboards) on typical workers. Evaluation complete.

So Ive been storyboarding differently. Yesterday, after round four of a storyboard review process (which has stretched out for months, by the way, due to unavailable/overloaded client SMEs), the lead ID at my client came back asking for audio on EVERY page. Now, maybe Im just jaded and want to get to an approved storyboard.

The SMEs had to create the storyboards. Once the storyboard was created, the lead instructional designer reviewed it, fine-tuning things to create an "instructionally sound" experience. But before they even set the SMEs loose on the storyboarding process, they gave them a training in the basics of e-Learning and instructional design!

I dont do any online teaching at the moment, but I do a lot of online collaboration on projects -- reviewing content with SMEs, going over storyboards, etc. Pete and Eric, thanks for the comments. I think I overcompensate with the lack of non-verbal communication by hamming it up. This is not something I do consciously, I realize).

Other benefits of working with two monitors: 1) Have a source document open on one screen and be writing a proposal/storyboard/script on the other. I know when theres something new to read (gmail, rss) and I always have easy access to search. 2) Watch an online Adobe Connect presentation in one screen and blog about it in the other.

Just out of curiosity, what do you use to storyboard your stuff? Ive been storyboarding in Word for years and it continues to work for me. My "storyboard" is just the words and the descriptions of the graphics. When you storyboard in Word, have you created your own one-page template? I much prefer the macro. Thank you.

Estimating what fits into 30 minutes is hard - especially when youre staring at a course map/storyboard and trying to guesstimate. Another side of the picture is overall time versus chunking. Were trying to move away from loooong courses to ~30-minute segments. 12:19 PM Cammy Bean said.

How nice would it be to simply work with a SME and write the content into a storyboard and pass it on? Or how nice would it be to be handed a well-thought out and detailed storyboard and simply build all the pieces around it?
