Do not use clipart. But don't use silhouettes or any images of people that do not have faces. I learned everything I know from reading The Non-Designer's Design Book , Microsoft Manual of Style , and other books and classes along the way. Bolding and underlining all caps is THE WORST. Same rule applies to italics.

Do not use cartoonish clipart , what does it add (distraction). If you need an image to support a point, use real images, you can download many images from Microsoft's clipart page. There are other good sources of images but check whether they allow you to copy them and/or pay royalties.

On the other end of the spectrum, we also didn’t want the unprofessional feel of using mismatched clipart. For example, if you’re going to use clipart, that’s fine, but use the same style.

Use professional quality images (not free clip-art) that relate to your most important points, and make them large enough to be easily visible. In a big space, don’t let the AV folks flip back and forth between an image of you and a slide. We learn and retain more from an image than from only reading and/or listening.

Here’s a simple solution, you can compress your images in PowerPoint. Another option is to start with placeholder images. You’ll find that things kind of bog down.
