Microlearning – what the devil is it and 5 things it’s good for

There are certainly a wide variety of definitions of microlearning. I went to a talk on the subject at a conference recently, where the learning interventions they were discussing were up to an hour long(!) – not quite my definition of micro. Because microlearning is, by definition small. Perhaps microlearning is the answer?

Back to Basics – What is eLearning?

He has kept his definition deliberately broad to take in everything from self-study lessons on a PC to social learning on mobile devices, use of video and virtual classrooms which deliver live group workshops. Whereas we already know how vital interactivity is in learning, passive learning resources definitely have their place.

How to Create an Effective Blend

Given the huge range of learning interventions we can now use this is a far too limiting definition. My definition is broad and encompasses both online and offline interventions and may include an instructor-led element. Some people hold that blended must include an element of classroom but for me it doesn’t.

Now, I’ve always disliked the job title ‘instructional designer’ – it is elitist, in that you need to be in our industry to know what it means; it’s too narrow in it’s definition – the design of instruction usually in the form of elearning courseware, and it makes a highly creative, enjoyable job sound downright dull and boring.
