I created characters that the learner follows throughout the course. We had to go with lockouts, meaning the learner must go through the topics in order and cant advance to the next topic until the previous topic has been completed. Your scenario-based questions should help allay the clients fears. Storyline. And we made it fun.

The learner could listen to the audio if her preferred style was auditory, OR read the text if her preferred style was visual. Give the learner a variety of ways to access the content -- on the same screen. We each took a survey, the results of which showed what type of learner you were. Thats about all I knew of it.

So youve got some great ideas on how to make your content more engaging , how to get the learner into the flow. Admit to the learner upfront that the content may be dry. In Michael Allens Guide to e-Learning he reminds us to motivate the learner by giving them the WIIFM (whats in it for me). Sell the course to the learner.

Collaboration Software Learner generated content (instead of teacher preparing things, learners put things online and edit together. Requires some changes, but not highly disruptive. Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. Something like 60-70% of the learners preferred the rough version, created by the expert. And create content that learners will trust. I have also had SMEs, and myself, do the audio piece and the authenticity does help.

Theres a difference between creating a tear-jerker of a program that reinforces all the wrong learning points, and creating those emotional hooks that motivate and engage the learner in your content in order to ensure knowledge transfer and retention.

I couldnt see the original citation (maybe a bad link) but I can easily imagine a visual-with-audio presentation that requires no actual thinking on the part of the learner. They often use slick video to show a concept while a voice-over explains everything, so the learners only role is to passively absorb. Im way out of practice.
