Like many of you, I was surprised to find out that Skillsoft is in the process of acquiring SumTotal. Here according to the documentation listed on the Skillsoft web site, is what they see as the real value of the SumTotal acquisition (text listed is actual wording on their document): Skillsoft and SumTotal provide highly complementary HR solutions. Combination of Skillsoft and SumTotal offers comprehensive, content-rich HR solutions. Who provides learning or training (some people see a difference between) to customers?  They are not. As you can see, providing insight when you haven’t been standing in your “shoes” in a manner of speaking, really doesn’t tell you the reality, because they haven’t had to be in reality. If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down.   I should note that Saba is another HCM possible player, and that the majority of their customers also buy two modules (learning and performance). SumTotal by Skillsoft. I can’t figure them out.  SumTotal ruined IMO the GeoLearning LMS known as Maestro and will Skillsoft buying SumTotal, I wondered to myself whether this would be great or awful. Anyway, SumTotal is another system heading towards the HCM space.

Courseware LMSs – Good or bad for the industry?

Maybe you scored it via Wiley, but in many possibilities you purchased the content thru your LMS vendor.  It’s much easier than say going directly to the content provider, buying it from them and then having them talk to your LMS vendor to put it in for you (which, honestly you should do, because it will save you money). First off, there are vendors out there who pitch they are an LMS when in reality they are a courseware provider that has some type of learning platform.   I see it often in press releases or via a publication who says it is one thing when in reality it is another.

Rankings are based on my directories which are updated monthly; I also keep a separate directory which will contain more vendors than listed within the visible directories – reason being it offers clients (those who hire me – buyers to have an added bonus, of course it contains much more info); that said the monthly directories provide key info and in future updates have new columns added. Marketplace now included courses you can buy from other content providers – how is this different from some vendors of today who can add content from 3rd party vendors, when you call them?
