ILT is turning WBT in2 ILT online – its not working

eLearning 24-7

I’m tired of seeing PowerPoint with an audio or video clip spun as a sound WBT course. I focused on what makes WBT tick, what is the differences between WBT and ILT. They all were used to the ILT approach. They assumed that WBT, was like ILT but just online. . Because in their past, someone had followed that mantra and create courses based on ILT principles. It was ILT. ILT – the evil empire. ILT serves some purposes.

Learning designers themselves are learning more about the psychology of learning behaviors that it’s not always about self-paced e-learning or an ILT workshop. However, tool vendors need to listen to IDs on what they need and keep an ear to the industry.

April Big Question - ILT and Off-the-Shelf Vendors – What Should They Do?

The Learning Circuits

Like many industries today, there are significant changes going on for Instructor-Led Training (ILT) and Off-the-Shelf Content Vendors today. In recent conversations with different vendors, they cited a variety of pressures that are making their situations increasingly difficult: On Demand : Customers want to have both up-front training and on-demand materials. This causes several problems for ILT and Content Vendors.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed). rather then going through the LMS vendor. ILT/Classroom mgt – 48.5%.

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Sure there were exceptions on the desktop side – most notably Articulate Storyline, but overall until desktop vendors see the advantages of SaaS, especially with real time collaboration and peer review, tablets will be slow going. Audio editing – still no match to Audacity, a free program. I love the end of the year.

“Automating” your Classroom Training

This capability is available from a number of vendors, but generally not delivered all that well. A number of more recent LMS vendor solutions on the market have tended to focus more on web-based/virtual training and (thankfully) much-improved user interfaces overall. audio, video, pictures) into the classroom environment appeals to all generations and further enhances the in-class experience. Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. A file repository in the LMS world is the ability for end users/administrators to places files into a library or folder if you will whereas students can access, view and download the files (documents, video/audio etc.). I am projecting the analytical part to significantly increase and to expand the capability to use solutions such as online storage (which a few vendors are offering) and product like Dropbox and CalenGoo. Online Learning vs. ILT.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Trainers handed the task of building courses and incorporate the builds as an extension of ILT – i.e. linear. 43 Vendors do not have one.

SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. My personal favorite is the ability for the teacher to leave audio and video feedback to the students. For a vendor who has been around for more than 14 years you would think they finally get the whole value of asynchronous based learning. I might as well get this out quickly to avoid the suspense.

The vendor? Nowadays, you can create such a front end, but add audio or people moving around, when a click of their mouse, engaging the learner – yes, looking right at them and engaging them, and you engage back. Basically the synchronous approach is in essence, shoving ILT online with some discussion threads, whereas the end user enters in some text, others respond, and they hope the instructor is active in the experience (many are not).
