Social learning refers to a class of learning, which includes wikis, blogs, screen sharing, podcasting, photo sharing, social bookmarking, collaborative working, social networking, etc. Social learning (small S, small L) does not refer to the use of social media in top-down, formal learning.

A lurker might very well be giving back by performing better at their jobs, by sharing insights with others in the context of their daily work by using the learning gleaned from lurking. Lurkers are part of the all-important weak-tie network, and it's important to keep them engaged, even if engagement does not translate to participation.

Maybe this more appropriately would be called Learning Design - or eLearning Design - or maybe something else that implies performance support as well. How about when you build skills around scanning via RSS, social bookmarking, reaching into networks for expertise, etc.? Now the interesting part. Is it the same picture?

Yammer (internal twittering) is almost impossible to explain to someone who has no experience with any social networking (and probably not with anything more than email lists). As a side note, I think selling Twitter/Yammer is harder than selling social bookmarking and wikis. How are they improving performance?

I have this feeling that we need a whole new lexicon for talking about the instructional impacts of furl, del.icio.us, frappr, etc. Why is this important? Of course, its early - I could be wrong.
