Why Do I Need an eLearning Vendor When I Have My Own Team?

Illumen Group

Why Do I Need an eLearning Vendor When I Have My Own Team? Maybe what you really need isn’t a vendor, but rather a part-time strategic partner or developer who is there when you need them, and not when you don’t. Here are just a few ways a partner like Illumen has helped organizations by meeting them where they were at and playing the role of that flexible specialty player on their team’s bench. The post Why Do I Need an eLearning Vendor When I Have My Own Team?

Also, major browser vendors are integrating these open standards into their browsers and deprecating most other plug-ins (like Flash Player). And the Flash player will be reduced to a vestigial application on your computer. Does not require any proprietary player to run it.

HTML5 Fans Rejoice – Adobe Ditches Flash Player on Mobile Devices

Right now, at m-learning vendor locations around the world, especially in the RCAT space, they should be scheduling meetings and coming up with a new perspective and approach to their products. For LMS vendors, adding “HTML5 feature sets makes sense – especially if they are adding mobile learning components in their system. For vendors whose products are in the works for HTML5 output (ahem, in beta), perhaps speeding up the process wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

Saba Player Templates and Best Practices

Learning Developments

Use a player template in saba that will serve as the table of contents for the course. It seems uncommon for LMS vendors to provide this functionality. It seems there would be a toggle in Saba for this but I don’t see it as an option in my player template. The question is “what is the best way to create a video based training course in Saba?” When first answering a question like this, I like to look around for best practices. I have a lot of video based content.

Finding a MMOLE/Virtual Learning World Vendor

Kapp Notes

There are a number of preliminary things to consider when beginning to search for vendors to assist you in developing a MMOLE. Whether the goal is to reach out to alumni through a shared virtual space or creating a virtual machine shop to teach safety to mechanics, the underlying purpose and business objective must be articulated to the vendor. When the vendor understands the business requirements, they can better craft the solution. Vendors cannot read your mind.

#HRTECH Learning Vendors Preview – Who to see and who to avoid

eLearning 24-7

Well, not yet, but it is coming up and with that are all those wonderful vendors and that magical expo. But one of the biggest problems I see at such shows are the number of vendors who in hindsight I wished I avoided. I recall at ATD this past year, a vendor who was trying to sell people ahead of time their LMS. And, because many of the other vendors who are here at HR Tech, really are just average to poor (but not everyone). Welcome, welcome all!

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. There are more vendors in the LMS space under 10K then in the past – thus meeting the markets’ needs yet the authoring tool space is seeing a spike in prices. Compared to the other big players – dominKnow Claro is a steal.

to the expo vendors who forgot to bring any type of product example to the show – this event will go down in history! An additional fee of $700 per day for vendors who wanted to use Wi-Fi, which some vendors found to be spotty at best. One vendor I know declined the Wi-Fi and instead used their 3G smartphone tied back to their laptop. Authoring tools – Usual players were there, and a couple of newbies – but hey it is a start. As a vendor though, whether you are based in the states or going into the states (from another country), the price wars await you. Next thing you know, the other vendor retorts, “I can beat that” and just like that, as a vendor you are in a war. . First off not every LMS vendor does what I’m about to tell you, but oh boy, plenty do – and it is not just the big players, it could be mid-size, heck even small size vendors. .

Top 10 LMSs for 2013

Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. Rankings are based on my directories which are updated monthly; I also keep a separate directory which will contain more vendors than listed within the visible directories – reason being it offers clients (those who hire me – buyers to have an added bonus, of course it contains much more info); that said the monthly directories provide key info and in future updates have new columns added.

On Fire in 2013 – What’s going to be hot in e-learning

eLearning 24-7

One vendor already offers it in 2012, and knowing this industry – if something takes off and works, others will follow. Right now, you have to upload the course as you would with your SCORM wrapper, where you self-upload or use the course within an online mobile platform from your authoring tool vendor. One vendor told me they will incorporate it when it becomes certified – uh systems and authoring tools can be certified not a standard.

SCORM compliant learning object generator, customized editing interface, web based media player that works across multiple platforms, video/audio, image slides, text synchronization. I love the ribbon style approach, the custom branding angle with your player, audio and video narration, SCORM/AICC – perfect for the masses. iSpring Suite - Supports HTML5 output, audio and video narration, awesome feature set including branded player, SCORM 2004, 1.2

Reduces costs to vendor, which is big because everyone knows that support inc. While many vendors pitch mobile learning they seem to be stuck on the idea that people are not interested in online/offline synchronization. A couple of vendors told me they think it will be a fad. As I have noted in the past, I know of many vendors who are working behind the scenes to change their UI. Key players are. A couple of vendors quoted me plus 10K for less than 500 records.

Q&A from Blog Readers on E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

My latest take on those three vendors (plus one) are: Cornerstone On Demand – I have seen the new UI and I like what I saw. At one time Geo was a dominate player in mid size. They also have a lot of partnerships with LMS vendors – so that adds to an additional distribution channel. . So many to choose from and some vendors go to all of them – forgetting who their target audience is for their system. That doesn’t mean some vendors are not trying.

If you like having scenarios in your courses, you will this tool, because not only does it come with a scenario builder, but also custom branding with your player, a ribbon style similar to what you see in the Microsoft Office products (which adds a familiarity touch), audio and video narration, screen capture/recording, assessments, interactions such as 3D cube, panoramic zoom, and ebook. A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it.

LMS and Learning Portal Directory Plus HTML5 Course

eLearning 24-7

Latest: 303 LMS & Learning Portal Vendors. 28 free open source vendors – on 2nd tab. Vendors are listed from all over the world. List includes Lite LMSs – which is a new trend and LMS vendors who enable you only to upload their course content i.e. content created in their products into their system. They do not allow you to use any other 3rd party rapid content authoring tool vendor.

When is a LMS not a LMS?

eLearning 24-7

I should note that you cannot use any 3rd party vendor authoring tool to upload courses into these systems. Cannot upload off the shelf content from a 3rd party vendor – say Rosetta Stone or Skillsoft or in some cases e-learning marketplaces. Newbie trend – custom URL domain – irony: it is a trend that is being seen across the entire LMS space, with more and more vendors offering it at no charge.

Best of the Best – Extended Enterprise or multi-tenant LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Just because a system lists itself as an extended enterprise does not mean it comes with multiple domains (which with some vendors includes customized) nor with multiple portals or my preferable term – “multi-tenant” You may see an “extended enterprise” which not only refers to the company’s employees, but also their customers and channel partners. Native app available in iTunes/Apple and Google (Android) – very few vendors have native apps.

Psst. You wanna buy some features?

eLearning 24-7

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. Desktop sharing (appears with a few vendors). Section 508 (still shocking at the lack of vendors that fail to offer this feature). more common is partnering with a web conferencing vendor). Branding – the only difference is some vendors still charge for this – my question: why? Guess what some vendors do.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. I see it a lot, especially with social learning and the wonderment of some vendors of adding a “discussion forum and text chat room&# as part of their solution. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. .

Being Thankful: E-Learning Thoughts

eLearning 24-7

Vendors who added innovative features including text to speech (way to go SoftChalk), to true HTML5 support (Claro, Cm-Studio, Rapid Intake, Toolbook and sort of HTML5 output – Lectora) to image editors, SDK kits, gaming sims and Sony PSP devices. Vendors who added robust feature sets in their LMSs – including ebook publishing, social media functionality beyond the same ol same, online/offline synch, podcasting, 3D worlds. Thank you to Vendors offering Discounts.

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

eLearning 24-7

billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. PGP (Portable game players) are listed number three only behind smartphones and tablets for mobile devices sold.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. One vendor focuses only on Blackberry (not just Playbook but their smartphone like product). Vendor adoption is slow.

E-Learning Early Indicators

eLearning 24-7

Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Apparently, the potential customers and even clients are speaking and those vendors are listening. Not just a few vendors, the industry as a whole. A significant number of vendors, reported higher revenue and sales numbers in 2010, then in 2009. A number of vendors whose real focus is the Talent Management/Performance Management market.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. Web conferencing vendors can establish themselves to expand beyond the meeting standard.

VOIP 75

E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

eLearning 24-7

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.
