All they care about is whether the system is in “the cloud” SaaS or “in the cloud” to the consumer means that is it hosted on your servers or wherever you host your LMS and they can access it via the internet regardless of where they are located as long as they have an internet connection. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

If your goal is just to post the course on a server and let people access it, just for the sake of learning and you don’t care about tracking of any sort – then no, you do not need any compliance standard. Why do some vendors have trials and others do not? A few vendors offer the trial but request your credit card.

The easy part is that most mobile learning vendors have free trials. In at least two cases, the free trial allows you to keep the files you create, so you can create a learning object and put it on your servers and use it any way you like (demo, part of business case, pilot, etc). It is easy and difficult to get started.

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power.

The problem though is that there is a crisis going on in the K-12 sector and it is tied in part to e-learning (with wins and losses) and LMS vendors who serve that sector. and K-12 LMS vendors (a chunk of them). Possibly three parties in the rest of the world – Schools, some Governments, and a nice slice of K-12 LMS vendors.

Graphical progress bar – basically less text or funky icons that only the vendor knows what is – example, a recall one vendor using a floppy disk to represent an online course. And frankly, that isn’t something most vendors would want.
