On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Video e-learning tools or video of some kind – Minimal, but one did spark my interest – more in my “Show Product” topic.

Despite overall consumer demand (not just within e-learning) for tablets, and numbers showing that tablets are outselling notebooks, e-learning vendors as whole are sitting back and waiting. The courses are still on his device. Communities tied to courses rather than the entire platform. Bottom Line.

Lots of ILT vendors – again, the show has always been geared towards this, so no surprise, in fact, ATD formally known as ASTD has always been heavy on ILT and book things, and just in the last few years has seen a major increase in e-learning vendors, with the past show being nearly 50% – the highest ever.

Subject matter experts are embracing the more sophisticated rapid e-learning tools which allow server side development with international collaboration and “instant&# course deployment. But, the reason I constantly bash this into e-learning vendors heads is this just DON’T GET IT. When a vendor decided to add mediawiki to their LMS, so it looks exactly like Wikipedia, while everyone else uses some funky looking wiki.what happened? E-Learning 24/7. Yes, I love consumer slate tablets.

This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . In all the years I have attended and have known about ATD (formally ASTD), this year is by far the most in terms of e-learning vendors, especially those in the LMS space.

ASTD TechKnowledge – if you are an e-learning vendor this is a must show for you. I’ll be at the upcoming show in Vegas – with iPad in hand, note taking and of course, live tweeting. ASTD International – This year it is in Denver, and again it often is a mixed bag.

The reason I say education/academia more so – is that it is geared towards synchronous based learning, which is used more than 95% in education/academia space. Key Features: Ability to view in real time an instructor presenting a course via video, while the attendees are elsewhere. Thus you can have on-site training. Bottom Line.

In the case of the Avant, it was the Avant browser, due to other issues and not the vendor’s system. Yet, Avant supported Flash and Java. This is FALSE.

However, with ASTD’s TechKnowledge 2011, starting next week, I’m going to hold off until after TK11, to write on virtual worlds. What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. It offers the ability to create courses in HTML5 or Flash.

I circled Chapter 6 (moving from creating rigid course structures to small, easily searched nuggets) and Chapter 8 (gamers expectations of bosses/teachers).
