Linear courses are often the result of our focus on sharing information and not knowing how to move beyond this. In today’s post we’ll look at a few guiding principles that help in the transition from linear to interactive elearning. Instead of pushing information out, create a way for the learner to pull information in.

What I’d do is treat each screen the same as a slide and then use clickable icons to reveal the course’s information. Each icon would have a label and when clicked would display additional information. The trick here is to pick icons that visually represent the essential idea of the information. Many times the compliance courses share information that is already available in other formats in the organization. If that’s the case, do you need a full multimedia product to share that information? For example, the course navigation is locked or there’s way too much information. Often there’s little concern about how relevant the information is to the learner. Thus the learner is usually not engaged and has to wade through a lot of information. They’re about sharing information using elearning tools. Information-based courses need to demonstrate a greater awareness of the content. There were no performance goals in these modules other than to share additional information. In either case, step away from an information dump and let the learner process the information.

Consistent delivery of information. And it’s quite effective in sharing information. A simple linear course that allows the person to get the information as fast as possible is one of the best things you can do for the organization. Without any context, a pyramid generally will tell you that the information is weighted based on its position in layers and that there’s usually some sort of interconnected sequential relationship. A key is to see each slide (which becomes a Flash movie) as a piece of information. Your job is to assemble to information. Real learning isn’t a one-time event (like many elearning courses) where it’s just a matter of getting new information. I know that many customers want to lock navigation so that they “get all of the information.” Give them ways to collect information. Learning is a funny thing. This is faulty thinking. Focus on relevance.

Get Them to Pull Information. A good way to get them to pull information is creating a situation where they need to make an informed decision.
