The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

Now, why doesn’t a vendor mention this information to a potential client, at least the first point – I can understand holding off on the second point, for selling purposes. When a system offers performance management or talent management features (which IMO is now the same) two spins occur. Again it is not.

If you are seeking this route, some vendors include it at no charge, the others who offer it – charge extra. Task management. Smart App for TV – One LMS vendor. If you want to dive deeper into the standards – for example, e-commerce – don’t ask – do you offer e-commerce?

I’m glad to report that Litmos, a Lite LMS vendor, has dropped any additional cost for more storage, if you go over your included storage. A number of vendors whose real focus is the Talent Management/Performance Management market. Tablets were never even a consideration, and I’m talking in 2010.

Even more important, a learning management system was a new concept, so having to ask for X, when your budget has always been Y, isn’t an easy sell, especially when ROI is discussed. The learning management and learning platform markets are growing, in terms of sales and customer base, but it could be bigger.

Today, there is a real tiny number of e-learning companies offering it, but considering only one truly began it in 2010, it makes sense that it is going to grow. Lots of competition.
