Several large LMS companies added “informal learning&# to their sales shticks this week. One says “All documents accessed can be tracked as informal learning events.&# (Documents are events?) Rarely are these initiatives driven by the training organization. I suggest LMS vendors catch the Cluetrain in time.

The book made the case that most learning about how to do a job is informal. An organization that fails to address informal learning leaves a tremendous amount of learning to chance. Most corporations spend most of their training budget on formal learning, despite the fact that most of the learning that goes on is informal.

The “learn” part highlights the importance of baking the principles of sound learning into that environment rather than leaving it to chance. Learning is formal when someone other than the learner sets curriculum. Formal learning is pushed on learners. They learn when they feel a need to know.

Alongside this news is a video of a customer who explains he loves the vendor because of their ability to support old-style, formal learning. they can deliver the same training no matter where people are.
