Yet, organisations’ social networks are based on the presumption that conversations is all we need. There is a misconception that tacit knowledge can be ‘disseminated’ across an organisation through passive means like packaged e-learning modules , discussions in social forums, or webinars. However, we would fool ourselves if we would believe that anything ‘social’ will now suddenly be deep as well. Providing a social network to your staff and contractors doesn’t necessarily mean the less-experienced will learn from your champions.

italki - Social Network for Language Learning

They provide the ability to connect with other learners who are trying to learn a language. There are other resources, but the use of a social network to find people who can help each other learn the language is a great idea. italki is an interesting website in the language learning space - which seems to be very busy these days. People find each other using the site and then connect via chat, IM, voice/Skype, etc. Not sure if it can work in practice given the many other barriers that will come up. I'd be curious what people think about this as a learning mechanism

This merger points to another direction - combination of LMS capability + community / social networking. But like Q2Learning , they aim to provide visibility into community activities. He also pointed me to a Gartner quote: Enterprise social software will be the biggest new workplace technology success story of this decade. wonder if mzinga does?

Risk of Identity Theft Due to Social Networking and Blogging

The more one you participate in blogs, discussions groups and other social networking tools, the more information there is about you in the world for anyone to access. The basic guidelines I have is not to put anything in my blog, on a social network, even when I register on a site (even when that site is supposed to keep the information private) that I wouldn't want to be public. If I look at what I put in my blog and on social networks, I don't believe that this creates real additional risk because of the type of content I provide.

I’ve been using Twitter for a number of weeks now, and that, combined with several recent social networking activities prompted this reflection.  That’s cool, as it provides more ways for interaction.  I like seeing what people are up to, as well.  Twitter is a different story; described as micro-blogging, it’s more immediate, more a pointer.  Many of the people to track are sharing their interesting discoveries.  Sometimes it’s just personal things, which gives them richer dimension.  And Ning’s quite interesting  too.
