Manager's Role in Learning and Performance Improvement

The Performance Improvement Blog

What should be a manager’s role in employee learning? In answering this question, the first thing managers have to understand is that continuous learning is the modus operandi for all high performance organizations. Individual, team, and enterprise performance can’t improve without learning. By “learning” I mean acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs that help individuals, teams, and whole organizations improve performance.

Do You Need a CCO and CLO?

The Performance Improvement Blog

Should your organization have a CCO and CLO? I agree with Hebert and I have similar concerns with having a CLO (Chief Learning Officer). Learning is what employees in high performance organizations must do continuously as part of their jobs. Don’t put all the emphasis on a course catalogue and don’t hire a CLO. They are leaders of operational areas that require specialized focus on managing, maintaining, and improving systems that support those operations.

I attended the CLO Symposium with my ITA colleagues Jay Cross and Jane Hart. We got questions about how the role of the learning unit changes, about myths and new tools, and about measurement.
