And participating in MOOCs could well be one of the ways to inculcate and hone the skills. It is only through dialogue and discourse that patterns evolve.

Will we still need L&D?

If we ever get better about developing self-learning skills in school or university (ideally the former), could we eliminate the need for organizational courses? The notion is that once folks are better at self-learning, the reason for organized courses could fade. E.g. will we still need L&D?

I’ve argued that the community of practice should determine the curriculum to be a member of that community. Similarly, the resources to support progression in the community should come from the community, both within and outside the organization. But then, we shouldn’t leave that to chance.

To counteract that, it’s important to build communities of practice. Even if it takes effort and excellent organizational skills to set up communities of practice for geographically dispersed employees, the benefits are worth it. Encourage informal learning. Informal learning happens constantly.
