I have been part of Ning groups before, but find it overwhelming, very quickly because there seems to be multiple inputs for information. Even as an organizer, when I get into the Ning group, I feel overwhelmed. Common elements such as Profiles, Discussions, Friends, Groups. Social networks have a tendency to be a bit messy.

I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. A user can do this through posting to a threaded discussion quite easily. Typically they center around threaded discussions. Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. Options are simple.

For instance, we use Ning, a social network for our learning trajectories whereas we could use a learning management system (LMS). In Ning, the technology invites me to start on the fly with new discussions. and the code is determined by the people who developed the technology. This code in the technology is very implicit.

We managed to let people connect beforehand through a platform (ning ) and afterwards link participants to other networks or initiatives (like the outcome mapping community ). Last year we experimented with a ning platform, a twitter account and a few videos. In ning, there is a new application which is called member-mix.

I see this happen, too, in discussions of most other tools. I keep going in to look at conversations, and I'd guess that fully half of them right now are either arguments about how Google+ is better or worse than some other tool, or discussions of which other tool will or will not be put out of business by Google+. Or Ning groups.
