A site with more bookmarks, like Vicki Davis’ site community , has much richer information. In del.icio.us, it’s much harder to find this information, and much of it simply isn’t available. If I want to see who has bookmarked a particular post, I have to enter that URL separately.

This sounds a bit like IBM's innovation jams which have been very successful in generating ideas and discussion across the organization. This sounds similar to what Intel did with Intelpedia - which has been really great at providing support across a wide cross section of activities at Intel. Great way to find expertise and resources.
