Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. Just like some songwriters benefit from having others interpret their songs (no matter how classic their originals), some SME's benefit tremendously from someone else articulating their powerful knowledge in a way they simply couldn't.

In my opinion, knowledge of tools is certainly a value add. I agree with Rupa when she says that knowledge of tools is an add-on while designing a training program.
