In "3-Minute e-Learning" (2006), I stressed that we oftentimes forget the learner in the rush to compress content, time, and cost. While we use simple and less expensive tools for references like PDF , Word, PPT , etc. Rapid e-learning should mean rapid application of learning on the job.

Outdated books on WBT – from 1999-2006 that people read and assume this is effective online course building – while it provides some foundation, new approaches, stronger design techniques are showing greater effectiveness then what was available in the past. Books, presentations, blogs that state follow the PPT mantra.

PPT is among my must haves as well, good for concepts and I have tinkered in Articulate to produce some solid Interactive Job Aids (IJA). This manufacturing process training course was originally delivered as a four hour plus death-by-PowerPoint classroom session (if you could see the original PPT source content, youd begin glazing over within a few slides). And to be honest, it wasnt quite Six Sigma, but close. Within certain parameters as defined by the client (of course).

Hopefully some of those detail oriented 17 bullets per PPT slide will get that some of us dont CARE about or need all that detail that they crave. As designers and teachers, we need to be careful to incorporate variety in the way we present things to touch the ways people who learn things differently from the way we do need to grasp things.

I was glad for my education background, because I managed to make the best of the source (a PPT file). However, things kind of snowballed because of the language barrier and due to the numerous requests of the SME to add this and that to the course.

Ive done some wireframes in PPT, but I keep coming back to Word. @ Lisa (lmentz).Ive Ive been storyboarding in Word for years and it continues to work for me. My "storyboard" is just the words and the descriptions of the graphics. Havent found a better, more flexible tool yet. eB.Its a really hard balance to strike.
