The announcement today that Steve Jobs is stepping down as CEO of Apple brought to mind how long has been my relationship with the company he established with Steve Wozniak in 1976. The Apple II was sleek enough, but what about the colour monitor, the 5.25" drives and the dot-matrix printer?

Bert lives on in StrumSchool

And when I discovered computers, just about my first programming project was to put together what I called the Apple Guitar Workshop on the Apple IIe. I went on to teach guitar in my spare time for some five years or more. Well, last week Bert Weedon died, aged 92. But his spirit lives on in sites such as StrumSchool.

I encounter a similar situation when I come across Mac users and Apple aficionados generally. I understand that Apple is a more stylish brand and that some people feel it is worth paying more for the prestige that this reflects upon them. And Microsoft and Apple are not even direct competitors.

Surprising was that, for 37% of respondents, the iPad was their first Apple purchase. When you consider the ubiquity of the iPod and the number of iPhone and MacBook users out there, this is providing Apple with a host of new potential customers for their other products.

Word processing starts to emerge 1980: Launch of the Apple III, with 5.25" 1983: Apple launches the Lisa, the first computer with a graphical user interface (GUI), priced at around $14000. 1984: Apple launches the Macintosh.
