Personally, I dont like to hide things from learners and play guessing games, so I am an advocate of letting the learner know, up front, what they will be expected to do at the conclusion of the course, lesson, or whatever. Im a Word power-user and love all the little tricks and shortcuts. And it will serve a double-purpose in terms of educating them about the potential uses for wikis within their organization. I started off cutting and pasting a lot of documents from Word into the wiki. Ive had to get used to the formatting -- or lack thereof.

There seems to be a mix between contract and full time positions, and Im not sure how to read into that. Personally, I am starting to see a bit of a demand for this.

And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. Even when an important, job-related skill/knowledge deficit does exist, one problem I see is that "instructional designer" ought to mean "person who can help maximize the chance for people to learn." One of the participants talked about a focus group/research project his organization did. Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. They said it "sounded more real" and they trusted it more because they knew this person was talking from experience. So thats one version.
