In the past it was build it yourself (pricey) or find open source and customize it (could be pricey, but cheaper then complete build). The partner approach works this way: vendor A integrates Vendor B’s solution into their product. As a result, ILT vendors are embracing e-learning through a variety of ways.

There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Three months ago, only a few systems had either integrated for no additional charge or for additional fees, a talent management/performance management feature set. Some vendors like to stretch this out, but for reports (depending on what you want), the data more often then not, already exists in the system database – so they merely have to create/generate a report that can pull that information for you and then integrate it into your system. Authoring tool salesperson or site makes it look so easy to create this interactive course, but unless you have an ID skill set and with tech skills, it won’t happen. E-Learning vendors offer training or tell you they have robust training, you find out it is PDF guides with an accompanying video. I was impressed.

If you as the customer want to create your own API/Mashup or find one on the net and want to integrate it into your paid LMS, the vendor will charge you. In some cases, I have seen fees as high as 3K per integration. I believe it is because many of the vendors do not want their customers to have such power.

Now some vendors are saying an LMS is Legacy, again, totally not true, but the term means “old school and dated” Many LMSs are NexGen in fact, it comes to how the client wants to use the system, and the system themselves. If a vendor is 15 yrs old, it doesn’t mean their system is that old, and never updated it.
