A common argument I’m hearing from vendors on why they do not offer a social learning component in their system. &# “Companies are blocking social media access at their site and/or have social media governance policies&#. Majority of employees access social media sites out of the workplace.

There are enough vendors who are not going into the widget space, but are enabling the integration possibilities of APIs, which are really offers a powerhouse potential (a future emerging technology topic). One vendor asked if you wanted to learn more about their product and sent you to their help desk to notify them of errors or issues with their system (hmm, not likely to buy one from these guys). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

Go onto any social media site: Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Quora or any of the thousands of sites, and you will see people engaging with total strangers.

Web sites yes. When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. Ancient features such as discussion boards/text chat/forums – I offered these babies back in 1995 on my web site. Facebook like page with profiles — snooze-ville. Google apps – free for education – as long as you follow their specific guidelines. That said, this has become the norm in these systems.
